Christianshavn & Christiania

We meet at the Inner Harbour Bridge on the Nyhavn side and walk across the bridge to Christianshavn, a 400-year-old island where 13,000 people live. The bridge offers a wonderful view of the harbour, where many things have changed in recent years. We see, among other things, the most expensive apartments in the city, the Opera House and the old warehouses, while hearing about the development of the area. In the past, Christianshavn was an industrial and military district. Today, it is home both to the most expensive apartments in the city and to the Freetown of Christiania, a colourful mix of many different worlds. We walk along the canal and look at the sailing boats. In Strandgade, we see the oldest residential houses in Copenhagen. If we are lucky, we will visit one or two beautiful, hidden and historic courtyards. We walk past the Church of Our Saviour and, at the same time, admire the most beautiful church tower in the city. We visit Christiania, where approximately one thousand people live together in peace and harmony, although things have not always been that way, as we will hear. A great deal has happened there over the past 50 years. Christiania is often described as a social experiment. We walk back along the city’s old fortifications into the centre of Christianshavn and end the tour at Christianshavn Square. The tour can last two or three hours. The route is the same, but if you choose the three-hour tour, there will also be time to stop for a drink and a chat.
