Vesterbro in Transition: From Red-Lights to Trendy
Once known as Copenhagen’s sinful mile, Vesterbro is now hip, cool and trendy. In the past, prostitution, drugs and crime were commonplace here, making it Copenhagen’s red-light district, so to speak. Over the past few decades, everything has changed. The prostitutes have moved out and the hipsters have moved in. The Meatpacking District, where animals were once slaughtered and food was produced for the entire city, is now home to restaurants, galleries and speciality shops. Gentrification in its purest form. The tour takes us along Istedgade, Sønder Boulevard, the hidden and mysterious Westend, and the famous Værnedamsvej, which is sometimes called “Little Paris”. We visit Absalon Community House, which was once a church but is now a community centre. Enghave Plads has undergone major changes since the opening of the metro station and is now Vesterbro’s second centre. We walk through the beautiful, renovated Enghave Park and finish the tour in the Carlsberg City District, where old breweries and beautiful gates exist alongside new high-rise buildings. The tour ends at Carlsberg S-train station. The tour lasts three hours, but we can also offer a two-hour tour, which ends at Enghave Plads.
